The New York State Fair is in the middle of its annual two-week run, and so far, among the myriad state residents who have won ribbons in competitions in everything from arts and crafts to agriculture to animal husbandry to cooking to talent competitions, a number of Cazenovians have claimed prizes.
As of press time, ribbon winners from Cazenovia of whom we are aware include:
—Anne Doherty, a member of the Cazenovia Garden Club, received a first place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Division – Senior Division, Class 14 “Games People Play,” for her design of fresh or dried plant material and other components celebrating the board game Monopoly. The judges said of Doherty’s entry, which honored the Oriental Avenue space on the Monopoly board, “Bold dramatic expression. Beautiful subtle color harmony depicting Oriental influence.”
Doherty’s entry also received the Award of Design Excellence gold ribbon, which is given for the highest scoring exhibit of the entire design division entered by a single competitor. One is given during each show.
—The Cazenovia Garden Club won a third place ribbon in Artistic Flower Design Show One, division two, Bridge.
—Elizabeth Koennecke received a fourth place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Show Two – Senior Division, Class 8 “Games People Play” – Gaming.
—Sarah Sack won a fourth place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Show Two – Senior Division, Class 8 “Games People Play” – Poker.
—Cindy Bell won a third place ribbon in the Artistic Flower Design Show Two – Senior Division, Class 8 “Games People Play” – Ping Pong.
—Julie Mattina has won five awards at the state fair so far, including a first place ribbon in the Arts and Crafts category, handspun yarn division, class 5, for a hat and mittens set. The entry also was named a State Fair Division Winner and received the Cherry Valley Country Spinners Award. Mattina also received a second place ribbon in the handspun yarn division, a fourth place ribbon in the recycled craft division and an honorable mention ribbon in the hand knitting division.
—Nancy Sellers has won two ribbons so far at this year’s state fair: second place in special category class 2 and second place in sewing with flair division, both in the Arts and Crafts category.
—Jayle L. Bach received an honorable mention in the hand knitting division, Arts and Crafts category.
—James Tainter, of Erieville, received an honorable mention in the jewelry division, Arts and Crafts category.
—Theresa Reeve received a first place ribbon in the Culinary Canned Foods and Wilton Cake Decorating competition, junior division (ages 7 to 17) for cupcakes.
¬—Susan K. Reeve received a first place ribbon in the Culinary Pot Luck Day and King Arthur Flour Contest, special diet dish division; a first place ribbon in the Cake Day Competition, layer cake, frosted division; a second place ribbon in the Culinary Canned Foods and Wilton Cake Decorating competition, senior division (ages 18 and up) for cupcakes; and a third place ribbon in the Pie and Chocolate Competition, cream pie division.
—Gene Smith received a second place ribbon in the Horse Show, Section 1, Miniature competition, and a sixth place ribbon in the AMHR Mulit-Color Mare, Stallion, Gelding competition.
—Megan Brant and tied for second place in the Horse Show, Section 1, Opportunity W-T Pleas Equit Poles competition, class 1712; tied for fourth in the same division, class 1711; and received a fifth place ribbon in the Horse Show, Section 1, Opportunity Introductory Equitation – Crossrails competition.
