Onondaga — Strong competition greeted each of the Skaneateles indoor track and field teams when they went to SRC Arena for Wednesday night’s Onondaga High School League Division 2 championship meet.
And despite some strong performances, especially from Mia Grasso, the girls Lakers settled for third place, earning 78 points. That trailed Cazenovia, who won with 119 points, and Westhill-Bishop Ludden, who was second with 107 points.
Skaneateles did prevail in the girls 4×400 relay, where Grasso, Katelyn Ellison, Olivia Gage and Maddie Peterson blazed to a time of four minutes, 16.56 seconds that crushed the field, with runner-up Cazenovia (4:29.81) more than 13 seconds behind.
Grasso also prevailed in the 300-meter dash, edging Peterson, 43.54 seconds to 43.56, as they nearly reached the finish line together. But no one topped Grasso in the high jump, where she topped 5 feet and no one else was within four inches as Aubreah Lynn (4’6”) got seventh place.
Angela Krause emerged with a victory in the triple jump, where she went 34 feet to top Westhill-Ludden’s Annibel Coolican (32’6 ½”) by a comfortable margin. Also, Krause was fifth in the long jump, going 14’5 ½”, while Amanda Wetmore finished 10th after she took ninth in the triple jump behind Krause.
Julia Willcox went 1:45.17 in the 600-meter run, second to CBA’s Olivia Morganti (1:43.93), as Finan Malcolm was seventh in 1:51.69. Mikaela Terhune earned third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.76 seconds, with Brady Iles (10.35 seconds) eighth. Nieve Morse was 12th (23 feet) and Anna Neuenschwander 13th in the shot put.
Amanda Wetmore, in 7.79 seconds, beat out Cecilia Marrinan (7.86 seconds) for fourth place in the 55-meter dash. Natalie Condon was fifth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:21.78 as Maddy Brogan was eighth in the 3,000-meter run in 13:21.59. Condon, Malcolm, Emily Norris and Jillian Vanleer were third in the 4×800 relay in 11:24.49.
continued — Meanwhile, in the boys OHSL 2 meet, Skaneateles, without Tommy Hagen in the lineup, still had 24 points, putting them eighth in a nine-team field headed by Westhill-Ludden, who won with 114.5 points.
Luke Palmer, Josh McCabe, Noah Cliff and Jack Kimm rose to third place in the 4×200 relay in 1:40.01, not far from Cazenovia’s winning time of 1:39.85 and Westhill-Ludden’s 1:39.94 in a three-way classic. Palmer, individually, was fourth in the high jump, clearing 5’2” and was sixth in the 55 sprint, edging Cliff by 0.003 seconds as both finished in 7.36 seconds.
Kimm was fourth in the long jump, going 18’7 ½”, ahead of McCabe (17’7”) in fifth place. Kevin Danaher got to fourth place in the shot put, heaving it 37’7 ½”, with Chase Corcoran sixth with a toss of 37’4 ¼”.
The Lakers also saw Brahm Malcolm, Nicola Kunz, Liam Kerrigan and Max Moss finish seventh in the 4×400 relay in 4:26.61. Malcolm got eighth place in the 55 hurdles in 9.97 seconds as Kunz took 11th place.
Sam McClintic ran the mile in 5:17.09 and took ninth place. Nick Paciorek was 10th in the 1,000-meter run in 3:15.94, while Steve Ciaccio was 11th in the 600 in 1:40.37 and Graham McCarthy was 15th in 1:46.01.
Chris Corona (43.27 seconds) and Moss (43.61 seconds) were 11th and 13th, respectively, in the 300, though Corona fared better in the triple jump, taking eighth place by going 32’2 ¼”.
Following an appearance in Sunday’s John Arcaro Invitational (rescheduled from a Jan. 18 snowout), Skaneateles will get ready for this Friday’s Section III Class B championship meet, also at SRC Arena.
During that Arcaro meet, the girls Lakers earned 20 points in the evening session, finishing sixth out of 12 teams, with its best finish in the 4×200, where Marrinan, Terhune, Malcolm and Christina Ciaccio took third place in 1:56.86.
On her own, Marrinan got to fourth place in the 55 sprint in 7.80 seconds and also was fourth in the 300 in 44.74 seconds, while Condon was fifth in the 3,000 in 12:03.13, with Terhune fifth in the 55 hurdles in 9.78 seconds. The Lakers also were fifth in the 4×400 in 4:52.41.
