CENTRAL NEW YORK – One of the biggest stories of the area high school girls volleyball fall season was the way West Genesee was challenging – and beating – the SCAC Metro division powers it had struggled against so much in years past.
Now a big week of matches looms for the Wildcats, including one Wednesday against a Fayetteville-Manlius side also unbeaten after upending Liverpool in five sets, aside from also facing Cicero-North Syracuse.
WG only played once last week, putting away Central Square in a close match where the Redhawks made each of the three sets tight and challenging.
Still, the Wildcats got most of the key points to win it 25-20, 25-23, 25-22, led on defense by Colleen Barry, who had 21 digs, and Ella Beckering, who had 17 digs to go with her seven kills.
Claire DeVore’s 13 kills paced WG’s front line. Lilianna Iacampo had four kills and Alaina Dudzinski three blocks as Sonya Dunham recorded 19 assists and Sidney Hamilton eight assists, the pair each finishing with eight digs. Celia Spicer had three kills and three aces.
Bishop Ludden found itself facing Hamilton last Monday night. Each of the three sets was a close one, yet the Emerald Knights got the better of the Gaelic Knights 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.
Unable to get the late points, Ludden saw Bridget Dunham earn nine kills, eight assists and three aces, with Tiz’Ariah Blue adding six kills as Grace Hilton earned 12 digs. Natalie Testa (10 assists) and Jaylianna Pascarella (six assists) worked on the back line as Colleen Kelly led Hamilton with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Then, facing Living Word Academy Thursday night, Ludden won the second set 25-17 after dropping the first 25-19, but the Lions won the match by taking the next two sets 25-22 and 25-23.
