Things could not have gone better for the Westhill boys golf team as September got underway.
Already with a 3-0 record and a Henninger Invitational title over the large schools on its ledger, the Warriors claimed another big win on the first day of the new month, streaking into Labor Day weekend with a 208-222 victory over Skaneateles.
To this point in the season, the Lakers were 5-0, with all of its wins coming on the road. That changed at Camillus Country Club, though, as the three best individual rounds came from Westhill golfers.
Tim Alcaro shot a 38 for nine holes, three shots better than the 41s posted by Anthony Maglisco and Josh Marshall, and each of them was ahead of Skaneateles star Ty Jones, who led his side with a 42.
Making sure that the Lakers did not catch up, Sean Dadey finished with a 43 and David Bleskoski added a 45. In between them, Michael Murphy shot a 44 for Skaneateles ahead of teammates Ben Spinelli, Jack Canty (45 each) and Kenny Peterson, who had a 46.
Westhill was supposed to go to Rogues Roost last Tuesday to face Chittenango, but the rain did not let up enough and it got postponed. So the Warrors returned to CCC Thursday and, against Tully, won big over the Black Knights 203-248.
Dadey was in front of the pack on this day, his 38 two shots clear of Maglisco’s 40. Tully’s Ryan Shute did manage a 41, but Marshall posted that score, too, and Bleskoski improved to a 42.
West Genesee, who was battling for first place in the Salt City Athletic Conference, had a big match Friday against Fayetteville-Manlius at Woodcrest Golf Course, but could not upend the Hornets, taking a 202-214 defeat,
Windy conditions at Woodcrest limited Nick Bove to a 41 and Lucius Allen to a 42 as two F-M golfers beat those scores, Kyle Gilroy getting a 37 and Adam Butch earning a 39. Three other Hornets – Sam DiChristina, Cal Isley and Mike Millimaci – each shot 42s of their own, ahead of the 43 by Connor Barry and the 44s from Jack Corcoran and Tim Dipaola.
WG got back into the win column last Tuesday, handling Syracuse City 190-239 at Westvale. Wet conditions softened the course, which helped Bove and Corcoran as they both shot 36 for the Wildcats.
Jimmy LaValle, shooting a 38, held off Syracuse’s Jon Kinane (39) for third place among individuals. Dipaola and Dan Benetti both shot 40 as Allen earned a 41 and Barry shot 42. Jack Gordon gained a 46.
Just before facing F_M, WG won a non-league match over Cortland 192-212, with Bove posting a 34 to beat the Purple Tigers’ Landon Rozewski (37) by three shots. LaValle and Joe Artini both shot 38 ahead of Cortland’s Cooper Swartout and David Benjamin (39 each), with Corcoran earning a 39 and Will Good earning a 44.
