The Marcellus girls golf team would have a strong effort last Monday at Woodcrest, site of the OHSL Championships late this week, defeating Chittenango 207-235.
Mary Colella and Avery Mordaunt both shot 47 to lead all individuals, while Hannah Abbott’s 51 also beat out the Bears’ top player, Sara Schmidt, who had a 55. Tayler Furina finished with a 62, ahead of Alyssa Green (65) and Megan Haney (67).
Going back to Madison County on Wednesday, Marcellus prevailed again, this time with a 198-206 decision over Cazenovia, while on that same day Westhill, who lost to Marcellus on April 30, earned its own victory over Skaneateles 185-205.
For the victorious Warriors, Dori Klein and Julia Meisner both shot 44 at Skaneateles Country Club, ahead of the Lakers’ Grace Magee, whose 45 matched the total of Shannon Bunce.
West Genesee was back in action at home on Thursday, falling to Cicero-North Syracuse 202-219. Miki Riley’s round of 50 only trailed one individual – the Northstars’ Sydney Walker, who had a 44. Danielle Schmidt posted a 54, with Kaitlin Bivens adding a 57 and Jess Bobbitt managing a 58.
As that went on, Marcellus made it three wins in a row, toppling rival Skaneateles 212-219 at Skaneateles Country Club, where Colella, with a 45, trailed the Lakers’ Grace Magee (41), but got more help as Mordaunt shot a 49, Abbott had a 57 and Green improved to a 61.
Playing again on Friday, West Genesee ran right into undefeated Auburn and fell to the Maroons 204-256. Juliana Burns shot a 62 for the Wildcats, two shots ahead of Schmidt and Megan Kavney, but well back of Auburn’s top players, including Lindsay May, who matched par with a 36.
Nate Meisner is getting set to defend the Section III golf title he won a year ago, but his first order of business was making sure he and his Westhill boys golf team kept pace with the leaders in the OHSL Liberty division.
In first place going into last Wednesday’s match at Cazenovia, the Warriors saw that mark threatened when the Lakers beat them by a narrow 217-219 margin at Cazenovia Country Club.
Meisner shot a 41 for nine holes, which trailed his teammate, Andy Vadnais, and the Lakers’ Charlie Schaffner, who both posted 39. Sean Dadey added a 44, while Jacob Van Burne had a 47 and Carter McMahon a 48, but Cazenovia went in front because it got 44 from Tim Hunt and Nick Becker, plus 45 from Cody Thorp and Tyler Modzeleski.
It wasn’t difficult for the Warriors last Monday as, improving to 6-1 on the season, it rolled past Jordan-Elbridge 199-250 at CCC. Vadnais broke part with a 35 and Meisner shot a 38. Jacob Van Buren had a season-best 41 in front of Jake Mullen (42) and Sean Dadey (43).
On the Eagles’ side, none of its top five indivduals beat anything Westhill put up. Nick Falcone still managed a 44, while Kyle Vanliew (47) beat out Max Bondgren (48), with Sean Conroy grabbing a 53 and Sean Ferguson managing a 48.
Meanwhile, Marcellus lost, 213-224, to Cazenovia last Monday to start its week of action. Grant Lewis shot a 42 at CCC, tying Modzeleski, but trailing Thorp, who led everyone with a 39.
Turning it around a day later, the Mustangs beat J-E 212-226 at Millstone. Carter Austin and Trevor Parker led Marcellus with matching totals of 40, ahead of Lewis (44), Nick Sonacchio (43) and David Bosak (45), while Falcone paced the Eagles with a 42 and Conroy had a 44. Bondgren and Vanliew both shot 46 and Cole Melfi finished with a 48.
J-E lost again to Skaneateles 194-231 on Wednesday. Falcone shot a 44, one ahead of Conroy (45) and two clear of Bondgren (46) as Vanliew and Melfi both posted 48. Jake Fontana led Skaneateles with a 37, with three teammates – Carter Streigel, Eli Goodell and Bennett Morse – each shooting 39.
