The Baldwinsville boys golf team entered the school-year portion of its schedule with a 2-1 mark, having swept past Central Square and Fayetteville-Manlius at home before going to Camillus on Aug. 29 and taking a 189-198 defeat to the West Genesee Wildcats.
Matt Monaco shot a 36, the same as WG’s Sean Stanistreet, but four other Wildcats (John Sullivan, Patrick Ciarla, Dylan Plis and Shamus Hickey) also broke 40, and the Bees could only match that total thanks to Tim Garaffo and Carson Hayes.
Meanwhile, James Pelcher, Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini, Andrew Roberts and Eion Tierney had equal rounds of 41, while Ryan Fecco fell back to a 47.
When the season resumed last Tuesday at Timber Banks, B’ville took out the combined Syracuse city squad 215-297. Again, Monaco led the way, shooting a 39, with Pelcher getting a 41 and Ben Donahue stepping up to earn a 42. Zach Ravas earned a 46 and Tyler Gutchess contributed a 47.
But that didn’t carry over into Wednesday’s trip to Lakeshore Country Club, where Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue team managed to defeat B’ville 191-208.
Again, Monaco led the Bees, with a 38, but his was the team’s lone sub-40 total. Pelcher got a 40, with Hayes shooting a 41 and the likes of Tierney and Ben Donahue getting rounds of 42.
On the Northstars’ side, though, Patrick O’Donnell had a 36, and got plenty of support from Jon Petrin, who had a 37, along with Brad Hamilton (38) and Eddie Szopinski (39).
Returning home to Timber Banks on Thursday for a rematch with West Genesee, the Bees would stay right with the Wildcats and get closer to victory, but could not quite topple the Wildcats in a hard-fought 202-205 defeat.
Remarkably, all five of B’ville’s top golfers – Monaco, Pelcher, Tierney, Cohen-Ciampichini and Roberts – landed on the same finishing total of 41. Even with that consistency, though, WG finished in front, the cushion provided by a 37 from Stanistreet, a 40 from Plis and a 41 from Joe Morgan.
In Friday’s searing heat, the Bees looked to bounce back against Central Square, and did so, doing just enough to beat the Red Hawks 193-197 at Greenview.
Pelcher would take the lead on this day, putting together a 36 to beat Monaco (37) by a single shot for individual honors. Central Square teammates Riley O’Brien, Kyle Bacon and Ryan McCarthy each shot 39, but Cohen-Ciampichini had a 39, too, to help B’ville hang on.
This improved B’ville’s record to 4-3, but it faces two more tough matches this week against C-NS Blue at Timber Banks and Fayetteville-Manlius at Woodcrest.
