To some degree, every Cicero-North Syracuse track and field season centers around the annual showdown with Liverpool.
There’s even more on the line in 2013, though, as both meets this Wednesday – the boys at Bragman Stadium, the girls at LHS Stadium – feature undefeated sides within the CNY Counties League National division.
The boys Northstars have won every meet it’s competed in this spring, including last Wednesday’s 116-25 romp over West Genesee where three different C-NS athletes won twice.
Mark Broughton got it going, sprinting through the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.6 seconds. He also helped win two relays, joining Shawn Webb, Jalen Jenkins and Steve Mirizio in the 4×100 (45.4 seconds) and teaming with Webb, Avery Yarn and Bryson Mayes to take the 4×400 in 3:39.2.
Joe Castaldo, in the throwing events, had a top discus effort of 122 feet 6 inches and a top shot put toss of 46’10”, while Morgan Austen chimed in with a victory in the 110 high hurdles in 15.7 seconds and a triple jump of 39’5”.
Jenkins won the long jump with a leap of 18’9”, while Yarn went 52.7 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Marcus Bannister took the high jump, clearing 5’8”, while Tate LaPort and Connor Osborne both topped 10 feet in the pole vault.
Sweeping the distance running events, the Northstars had Bryan Sibble take the 800-meter run (2:03.9), Anthony Lupia prevail in the mile (4:36.9) and Neil Gill cover 3,200 meters in 10:22.2. Gill, with Andrew Bearkland, Paul DeGennaro and Evan Russell, won the 4×800 relay in 8:39.7.
C-NS got past its last hurdle on the girls side when it went to Camillus last Wednesday and put together an 89-52 victory over West Genesee.
Javielle Fanizzi won three individual events, speeding to first place in the 200-meter dash in 26.4 seconds and going 16 feet 6 ½ inches in the long jump before she went 34’ ½” to claim the triple jump.
On the oval, Jacqlynn Halstead went 5:09.5 in the 1,500-meter run and added an 800-meter title in 2:29.3, this after running a leg in the 4×800 relay, which the Northstars won in 10:29.4.
Hannah Szumloz claimed the 100 hurdles in 16.7 seconds, with Jade Jenkins beating the field in the 100 sprint in 13.4 seconds. Destiny Monica threw the shot put 34’2” as Shannon Hanmer had a top discus throw of exactly 88 feet. Nicole Harringshaw cleared 4’10” to win the high jump.
The weekend brought yet another C-NS boys track victory in a big meet, this time at Friday’s New Hartford Invitational, where with 94.5 points the Northstars outdistanced Liverpool (71.5 points) and a field of more than two dozen squads.
C-NS won the 1,600 sprint medley relay, where Broughton, Yarn, Webb and Sibble roared to a time of 3:43.02, more than 12 seconds ahead of the field. In the 4×200, Broughton, Webb, Yarn and Steve Mirizio hit the line 1:33.19, exactly two seconds better than Rome Free Academy (1:35.19).
Austen, in 15.88 seconds, and Girardi (16.05 seconds) would go 1-2 in the 110 high hurdles, and Girardi returned to finish second in the 400 hurdles in 57.62 seconds as WG’s Pete Richardson won in 57.12 seconds and Austen took sixth place.
Broughton was third in the 200 (23.86 seconds) and Gill gained third place in the 3,200 (10:02.69), while Yarn took fourth in the 400 and Lupia was fourth in the mile in 4:35.54.
Webb got to fifth in the 100 and C-NS also was third in the distance medley relay (11:26.13) and sixth in the 4×800 relay. Castaldo was third in both the shot put (46’10”) and discus (139’8”) as Osborne took sixth place in the pole vault.
A day later, in the girls Rome Invitational at Rome Free Academy Stadium, the Northstars had 59 points, good for third place behind host RFA (68 points) and Bethlehem, who won with 84.5 points.
Jenkins edged RFA’s Dana Husband, 16.71 seconds to 16.81, in the 100 hurdles final, while Sophia King was fifth. Jenkins added a second in the 400 hurdles (1:09.90), with Madison Kolakowski sixth.
Halstead provided a highlight when she won the 3,000 in 10:56.61, the only time under 11 minutes, also taking fifth in the 1,500 in 5:04.37. Waterrud made her way to second place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:48.4.
Monica got to third place in the shot put with a heave of 33’8”. Theresa Brown and Whitney Hotchkiss were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault. Fanizzi was fifth in the 200 and seventh in the triple jump. C-NS also was fourth in the 4×400 relay in 4:24.34 as Colburn, with 2,222 points, took sixth place in the pentathlon.
