Another undefeated season is in the books for the West Genesee girls swim team, who have the extra benefit of having the Section III Class A championship meet take place this Friday at its home pool.
Before that, though, the Wildcats first had to take care of one more bit of regular-season business – namely, a visit from Baldwinsville, who like so many others got overwhelmed by WG’s numbers in a 92-83 victory on Tuesday night.
It was only that close because the Wildcats let up in the last three events, after a defining 200 freestyle relay. In that event, the quartet of Olivia Castro, Brianna Smith, Kaitlin Dunning and Sinead Guy finished in one minute, 42.58 seconds, breaking the WG pool record.
Castro had already taken part in three winning efforts, including the 200 medley relay opener, where she joined Smith, Erin Dowler and Shannon Cahalan for a victory in 1:54.76 that broke another WG pool record.
Then, in the 200 individual medley, Castro, in a time of 2:20.86, prevailed as Erin Dowler (2:25.63) finished second. Moving to the 100 freestyle, Castro won again, finishing in 55.52 seconds, leaving Guy (57.62 seconds) in the runner-up spot.
But Guy did prevail in the 50 freestyle, edging Smith, 26.43 seconds to 26.75. and WG went 1-2 in diving, where Chloe Feuer picked up 152.85 points and Abby Mullett (143.25 points) earned second place.
Cahalan, in the 100 butterfly, was a close second (1:03.74) to B’ville’s Alexandra Connor (1:03.40), while Dunning twice had to settle for runner-up finishes, in the 200 freestyle (2:07.64) and 500 freestyle (5:42.64). Each time, Dunning was beaten by the Bees’ Noelle Staso, who swam the 200 free in 2:05.55 and the 500 free in 5:31.03.
During the sectional Class A meet on Friday, WG will look for team honors, and then will go for an overall sectional championship as part of Sunday’s state qualifier at Hamilton College.
