Baldwinsville Central School District students demonstrated their gratitude this Thanksgiving by conducting service projects all around the district to help out those in need in the local area and beyond:
* Before Thanksgiving, Van Buren Elementary School began a food and winter clothing drive for the Salvation Army. Students and staff are filling barrels and boxes with non-perishable food items and hats, gloves, scarves, etc.
* Reynolds Elementary School first-graders decorated placemats and lunch bags for the area Meals on Wheels program to spread kindness and good wishes to meal recipients.
* Ray Middle School collected hundreds of food items to help the Baldwinsville Food Pantry restock its shelves.
At Palmer Elementary School, the school collection for the United Way was coordinated by the students and staff of the school’s OCM BOCES SKATE program.
McNamara Elementary School established a Thankful Thoughts board, based on an idea recommended by two third-graders who wanted to help with the school’s bullying prevention and character education programs. Bianca Capilli and Sofia Balistreri presented Principal Jane Nadolski and the entire McNamara staff with their idea for creating a space for students and staff to share notes about whom they are thankful for and why. Each day the school adds more thankful messages to a bulletin board in a main hallway. The activity is so popular that another board will be needed soon.
Elden Elementary School collected personal care items to fill 55 shoeboxes for the United Way’s Community Shoe Box Collection.
The Durgee Junior High School honor society ran a school supply collection for a school in North Carolina that was affected by devastating flood waters after Hurricane Matthew. For two weeks before Thanksgiving, students and staff donated thousands of items such as notebooks, pens, pencils and crayons.
