As the last days of summer draw near, I am excited that one of my favorite upstate traditions is fast approaching — the Great New York State Fair. The fair will be held from Aug. 25 to Sept. 5 and features a host of wonderful and exciting events for attendees of all ages.
Because of the $50 million investment the state is making in the fair, visitors will notice new and improved fairgrounds. The changes begin with the newly constructed Main Gate, welcoming visitors to this annual celebration of our state. We’ve also expanded and resurfaced the Midway to allow for more rides. The Wade Shows Midway will boast nearly 70 different rides, including one of the biggest traveling roller coasters in the country, a brand new Ferris Wheel, along with many thrill rides and an expanded section for young children.
This year at the fair, there will also be an increased emphasis on locally grown and made foods, with an expanded Taste NY Market now located inside the Horticulture building. This will be a place for visitors to sample a plethora of New York products, including fruits, vegetables, gourmet cheese and wine, craft brews and a host of other locally-made specialties. The fair has always been a celebration of everything New York State has to offer, with a renewed focus on agricultural entrepreneurs. The Taste NY Market will be the perfect place to try and buy some of those great products.
There are also numerous promotional days such as Law Enforcement Day on Aug. 26, Seniors Day on Aug. 29 and 30 and Armed Forces Day on Sept. 1. On these days, admission for these valued members of our community is free of charge. Law Enforcement and Armed Forces days will also feature parades in the evening.
The State Fair would not be complete of course without Dairy Day, on Aug. 29, so be sure to attend so you can enjoy a variety of delectable dairy products. The following day, Aug. 30, is Beef Day, featuring a “Create the Perfect Burger” contest along with fun and educational activities.
I encourage everyone to attend the Great New York State Fair and take advantage of the family-friendly entertainment and wide variety of food vendors. There is still time to purchase advanced tickets online at nysfair.org/advance-sale-tickets. Tickets purchased in advance cost $6 compared to $10 at the gate.
As always, if you have questions or concerns about this or any other community issue, please do not hesitate to contact me at 452-1115 or at [email protected].
