To the editor:
I believe the village ZBA was spot on in disapproving Aldi’s variance request for a second sign.
With respect to the Republican’s reporting of that request, I believe Mayor Wheeler’s point about “too many cooks in the kitchen” (HPC, CACC, the village planning board, etc.) was valid. In my opinion, those parties likely confused Aldi with regards to a “green light” for the sign. I believe Aldi listened to advisory input but in the final analysis overlooked the ZBA as the ultimate authority in the variance process.
Aesthetics, elevation of the sign and impact to the neighborhood, as the Republican noted, are all relevant criteria for a variance to the code (for approval for a second sign). What construction company does not study local code/specifications and, in the non-compliance with that code, make a timely request for a variance?
