To the editor:
The first mention of the possibility of having an Aldi’s market opening right here in Cazenovia I learned about when reading a recent Cazenovia Republican — April 20th date of issue. Since I don’t get to the planning board meetings I just had no idea that this was a possibility.
When I moved to Cazenovia back in 1973, there were three supermarkets in the village — a Grand Union, an IGA and a P&C — and they all managed to survive for many years. Currently, Tops Markets who bought out the P&C has a complete monopoly in the villages of Cazenovia, Manlius, Chittenango and even Canastota — although there is an Aldi’s near the village of Canastota.
Unless we are willing to travel to DeWitt to Wegmans or Canastota to the Aldi’s we have no shopping choices and I believe that an Aldi’s would be a real benefit to this entire community — including the surrounding villages. I actively fought against the proposed Walmart huge superstore that they wanted to open on Route 20 to the east of the village, but an Aldi’s market is a totally different situation and I don’t personally understand why anyone would find fault with this type of needed addition to the village.
As Cazenovia and the surrounding towns have grown, I truly believe that we can actively shop and support a second supermarket — especially one that has such reasonable prices and selections.
Just my opinion — factual and forward looking.
