Beginning Monday, April 5 at 8 p.m., PBS will air “Hemingway,” a three-part, six-hour series on the life of iconic American author Ernest Hemingway (check local listings). Directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, this film delves deep into the life of a talented and strong, yet troubled and tragic figure. The series also explores his limitations and biases as a man and a writer of the era in which he lived.
In addition to promoting this three-day event, Baldwinsville Public Library’s Brown Bag Book Club recently read Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms,” which is based on Hemingway’s own experiences in Italy during World War I and his relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky, an American nurse he met while convalescing in an American Red Cross Hospital.
Currently on display at BPL are many of Hemingway’s works (which are available for borrowing) as well as replicas of the Corona typewriter and Leica camera he would have used as an author and journalist. Make an appointment to come in (315-635-5631), see the display and borrow a book or two.
Whether he is already a favorite or this is your first time reading one of his books, Ernest Hemingway remains one of the most important authors of the 20th century and his works are as relevant today as when they were written.
