Whether you are looking for a job, found one to apply for, or just want an updated resume to be ready for a future job or career change, the library can help.
The Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) in North Syracuse offers weekly resume and job help during personalized one-on-one sessions with Adult Services Librarian Alissa Borelli.
Patrons can schedule a one-hour appointment to build a new resume, update an existing one, and get assistance with formatting and wording a cover letter.
“Whenever they register for resume help, I ask them to come prepared with a list of previous employment, skills, degree dates, certifications – whatever they want to include,” says Borelli. “I also ask them if they have a specific industry or job in mind that they’re planning on applying to, or if they just want an updated resume because it’s been a long time since they wrote the one they have.”
Borelli uses resources available at the library to prepare for each appointment, tailoring her research toward each patron’s needs. Throughout the session, patrons learn many valuable tips. “A lot of people don’t realize that if they’re not employed at a certain job anymore they should write in the past tense, or that older jobs should be removed if they’re pretty outdated.”
When the session is finished, patrons have a polished, completed resume. “I type their resume for them, help them with the formatting, and show them how to make changes to it in the future,” Borelli continues. “I save Word and PDF versions and send them to the patron’s email or save them to their flash drive.”
Training is also provided on how to navigate job sites like Indeed.com, search for positions, upload a resume, add references, and more. For those wanting help in applying for a job, Borelli primarily assists patrons with using the computer and navigating job websites, but also helps applicants understand the questions on an application.
Appointments for personalized job and resume help are regularly available on Wednesdays between 2 and 4 p.m., but may be scheduled at other times as well. Appointments are strongly encouraged so that preparation can be done to customize the session according to each individual’s needs. To schedule a session, call NOPL North Syracuse at 315-458-6184.
