Question: Once in place most statues remain stationary, but the statue in this photo has logged many miles and is experiencing its fourth mid-air suspension. Can you identify the statue? Do you know where the photo was taken and why the statue is hanging in mid air?
Last week’s answer: The answer to the first question from last week’s photo should have been easy. Of course that organization is the 202-year-old Female Charitable Society of the village of Baldwinsville. It is an organization that contributes a lot to residents living within the Baldwinsville School District. It is most visible with the medical loan closet located at 10 and 14 River Street that is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment. It also benefits Meals on Wheels, the Baldwinsville Food Pantry and Bee Full as well as other community needs.
Since 1817 it has been led by many dedicated women who oversee its activities. The board pictured last week was from the year 1945. They are: Seated, left to right: Mrs. Russell S. (Louise McMullin) Mercer, Mrs. Otis M. (Lillian) Bigelow, Mrs. George E. (Frances Weed) Campbell.
Standing, left to right: Mrs. Harry E. (Tina) Elden, Mrs. Barton (Ida) Meays, Mrs. Arthur (Christine Amos) Tyler, Mrs. Wallace (Gladys) Bigelow, Mrs. Karl (Gertrude) Gorke, Mrs. Irving (Cora) Smallwood, Mrs. Charles W. (Dora) Baker.
Linda Spatuzzi McLellan was the first person to respond with the correct answer on Facebook.
Martha Hosey also commented on Facebook and was able to identify a few of the members.
“This is a picture of the 1945 Board of Directresses of the Female Charitable Society. My grandmother, Mrs. Louise McMullin Mercer, is seated on the left. She was president for a number of years. Her dear friend, Mrs. Gladys Bigelow, is standing at the center of the back row in a dark top,” she wrote.
Email your guess to [email protected] or leave a message at 315-434-8889 ext. 332 with your guess by noon Friday. If you are the first person to correctly identify an element in the photo before the deadline, your name and guess will appear in next week’s newspaper, along with another History Mystery feature. History Mystery is a joint project of the Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse and the Baldwinsville Public Library.
