Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Cicero is collecting scarves for the fourth consecutive year on behalf of Foster Care to Success’s Red Scarf Project.
Foster Care to Success is a nonprofit organization that focuses on post-high school foster youths who have “aged out” of the social service system but still need assistance in moving towards an independent life. Foster Care to Success delivers care packages to foster students attending college, supplying them with basic resources that help them stay in school and continue their education. The scarves that have been donated through the Red Scarf Project are included in these care packages, providing the students with a unique, handmade, personal gift.
If you would like to participate by knitting or crocheting a scarf, there are a few guidelines to follow. The scarf should be unisex, soft, easily tied or draped, and should be red in color. Scarves should be approximately 60 inches long and between five and eight inches wide. If you’re not familiar with knitting or crocheting but have a desire to donate, you’re invited to join the NOPL Knitters. The NOPL Knitters are an informal knitting group that meets at the library to share their projects, progress, and expertise. The NOPL Knitters meet as follows:
- Mondays: NOPL at N. Syracuse from 10 a.m. to noon
- Tuesdays: NOPL at Cicero from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Thursdays: NOPL at Cicero from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Knitters’ skill level ranges from beginner to experienced, and new members are always welcome. Just bring some yarn and needles or hooks and they’ll be happy to help you get started.
Donations of red knit scarves should be dropped off at the NOPL Cicero library by Dec. 15.
