Cheryl Pula, a local author, historian, speaker and retired librarian, is returning to the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Brewerton for a series of programs about intriguing mysteries in history.
The series will kickoff with on Tuesday, May 9, with an exploration of “The Seneca Guns,” a name given to describe the loud, strange booming sounds occasionally heard over Seneca Lake and other bodies of water around the world. The source of the sounds remains a mystery, but this event will explore the fascinating theories.
“Mythconceptions: American History” will be the topic du jour on Tuesday, June 6. Pula will discuss some of the myths that are perpetuated in history, such as who discovered America, whether or not there was a Battle of Bunker Hill, who invented baseball, and why Ben Franklin really flew a kite in a lightning storm!
On July 11, the series will continue with “Vanished! The Disappearance of the U.S.S. Cyclops.” Many theories exist as to what happened, including the hijacking of the ship by her captain and German crewmembers, but no trace of the ship has ever been found. Her disappearance remains one of the enduring mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle, the area where the ship was last known to be.
The series will conclude Aug. 8 with “Collision Course: The Sinking of the Andrea Doria.” Built just after World War II, the opulent ship was involved in a collision with a Swedish liner and sank within several hours. The captains of both ships blamed each other, but who was really at fault?
Mark your calendar for these exciting discussions! All of the events begin at 6:30 p.m. at NOPL Brewerton and are free to attend. Registration is recommended, and those who sign up can opt to receive an email or text reminder prior to the program. Visit nopl.org/events or call (315) 676-7484 to register today.
