EDITORIAL: Seniors can make home repairs with RESTORE program

If you’re over 60 years old, your property taxes are current, you have homeowners insurance, you meet certain income guidelines and you’re looking to make repairs to your home, you may be eligible for a grant through the RESTORE program, a home repair program administered through the Onondaga County Community Development Division in cooperation with New York State Home and Community Renewal.

RESTORE will give eligible homeowners grants of up to $10,000 for necessary emergency repairs to eliminate hazardous conditions such as plumbing and electrical hazards, roof leaks, heating system failures, etc., if homeowners are unable to afford the repairs themselves in a timely fashion. Assistance is in the form of a deferred loan; if you do not own and occupy the property as your principle residence for five years following completion of the work, you must agree to repay the full amount.

Applicants must meet the following income guidelines:

For a household of one: $38,750

For a household of two: $44,300

For a household of three: $49,850

For a household of four: $55,350
