Darlene Grome was appointed by the West Genesee Board of Education to the position of director of special education starting on July 1, 2022. She will fill the position left vacant by Susan Murray’s retirement at the end of this school year.
She currently serves as the assistant director of education at West Genesee. A veteran educator and leader, Grome has committed 23 years to education in a variety of roles.
Prior to joining the team at West Genesee she has been an assistant special education director, CSE/CPSE chair, assistant principal, elementary teacher, and special education teacher. She previously was an admissions counselor at S.U. and has served in many roles in the United States Army Reserve.
Grome holds a bachelor of arts in psychology from SUNY Fredonia, a master of science in elementary education from Syracuse University, a master of science in special education from Syracuse University, and a certificate of advanced studies in educational leadership from SUNY Cortland.
Her certification areas are NYS Special Education, NYS Elementary Education, School Building Leader, and School District Leader. She also completed the NYS Superintendent Development Program.
Superintendent David C. Bills shared, “Throughout the process, experience, enthusiasm, passion and strong advocate for students and support of staff were repeatedly noted as part of Darlene’s work. She included ideas for future growth and initiative within the complex process of Special Education. Her communication and collaboration will continue to be an asset in this new role.”
On a personal note, she is a mother of three. Two of her children are currently serving in the military while her third is attending college. She enjoys traveling to visit her children and spending time with her family and friends. She is excited for this opportunity and looks forward to continuing her work with West Genesee students, families, and staff.
