This winter, Cazenovia College completed a project aimed at painting and re-covering all 252 seats in the Catherine Cummings Theatre.
“Refurbishing our theatre seats allows us to provide our patrons with a new, comfortable theatre experience,” said Theatre Operations Manager Colleen Prossner.
The initiative was one of several campus improvement projects recently undertaken by the institution.
Others projects include the creation of a new lab for the college’s criminal justice program, updates to several classrooms, new cardio equipment in the fitness center, and new entryways for several buildings.
“Cazenovia College recognizes the importance of the theatre as an asset to the Cazenovia community,” said Tim Greene, the college’s director of communications and marketing. “We want to make sure it is an attractive venue that patrons enjoy attending, and one that reflects well on the college and those who support the arts in Cazenovia.”
Formerly known as Cazenovia Opera House, the theatre was acquired by the college in 1968 and renamed in honor of 1925 alumna Catherine Cummings.
The multi-purpose facility is now a historic landmark that hosts a wide variety of cultural events, lectures, plays, musicals, meetings, theatre camps and fundraisers.
Each year, the Catherine Cummings Theatre presents such events as Jazz-N-Caz, the Cazenovia Chorale Holiday Concert, the Caz College Kids Theatre Workshop, and the college’s fall and spring productions, directed by Artist-in-Residence David Lowenstein.
The college is currently asking Cazenovia community members to consider contributing to local arts and cultural programming through the Take-A-Seat Campaign.
“Our goal for the Take-A-Seat campaign is $75,000, which will allow us to present an even stronger sampling of shows and presentations that the Cazenovia community so enjoys,” said Prossner on the college’s website.
