Roof repair at NSJHS caused small fire

In connection with roof construction at North Syracuse Junior High School, a small fire began in the roofing material at the school on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 7. Contractors had been working with heated roofing materials, a standard procedure in roof replacement. After workers had gone home for the evening, some roofing material began to smolder.

Just prior to 9 p.m., the presence of smoke was detected and the fire department was notified immediately. The North Syracuse Fire Department responded to the junior high shortly after 9 p.m., quickly discovered the cause of the alarm and extinguished the roofing material fire. The district is grateful for the rapid response and thorough work of all emergency personnel involved.

District personnel were able to promptly clean up debris from the incident and the school opened as normal. The school’s auditorium is temporarily closed so that roof repairs can be completed and water damage repaired.
