Members of Fayetteville-Manlius High School’s History Bee & Bowl team recently traveled south to take the ultimate history quiz.
On April 22-24, a team of 10 F-M High School students competed in the National History Bee & Bowl in and around Washington, D.C. Founded in 2010 by 19-time “Jeopardy!” game show champion David Madden, the national contest is a buzzer-based trivia competition that features questions about the history of the arts, sciences, religion, philosophy, language, historical geography, sports and entertainment.
The Fayetteville-Manlius School District team qualified for the national contest in January following a top-scoring finish at the regional qualifier held in New Jersey. The team divided into three subdivisions for the national event.
The varsity team, which included F-M High School students Sarah Percoski, Will Shepardson and Shirley Zhang, finished third overall in the Bowl championship’s lower bracket and earned a contest ranking of 127.
One of F-M’s junior varsity teams, which included students Matt Hasenwinkel, Matt Dai, Callie Humphrey and Jeremy Zhang, placed 40th overall in the Bowl.
The additional F-M junior varsity team, which included students Evan Bybee, Jake Gerardi and Cole Wang placed 85th overall in the Bowl.
Hasenwinkel also participated in the event’s History Bee, which is an individual competition, and was named the contest’s middle bracket champion.
The National History Bee and Bowl are sponsored by the History television channel and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
