Colonel Edward “Ed” L. Mazur, Sr., of Skaneateles, and most recently Lake Oswego, OR, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2020 at the age of 98.
Born in Endicott, N.Y., Ed was educated in a one-room-schoolhouse before attending Union Endicott High School and Syracuse University.
Ed was a Marine Corps Veteran, who served in both World War II and the Korean War. At one time in his Marine Corp career, Mazur was the commanding officer of the Marine Corps Reserve Tank Battalion in Mattydale, which he helped to establish while serving in the reserves. He also commanded VTU 1-16 at the 1st Marine Corps District, Garden City, N.Y.
After World War II, Ed went to work with Merchant’s Bank where he rose to the position of vice president serving as a loan officer, branch office manager and officer in charge of the mortgage department.
He served as the assessor for the town of Onondaga for 25 years and the Board of Assessment Review for the town of Skaneateles.
Ed was a member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and held the prestigious Appraisers Designation of MAI. He also held the IAO Designation in the Institute of Assessing Officers. He often taught mortgage related subjects at Onondaga Community College for the Greater Syracuse Association of Realtors as well as real estate appraisal courses at Cornell for the New York State Assessors Association.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Connie Mazur (2002). He is survived by his two children, Edward Mazur Jr (Marlea) and Carolyn Leahy (Timothy), two granddaughters, Heather Dixon (Marc), Lauren Leahy and two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Kaleb Dixon.
Ed donated his remains for anatomical study in Oregon. His family will take his ashes home to New York and he will be laid to rest next to his wife.
