Minimal traffic delays could occur on Route 5
Residents of Fayetteville soon can expect to see some updates being made to the western entrance to the village on Route 5 between Burdick and Highbridge streets, thanks to the EFC Western Gateway Green Infrastructure Enhancement project.
At the July 18 meeting of the Fayetteville Board of Trustees, Mayor Mark Olson announced all permits have been issued and the DPW has prepared the site for construction to begin in the next week or so. This project will improve road and sidewalk conditions on Route 5, add green infrastructure, add new signage to improve aesthetic elements and update the stormwater system to improve the quality of water that is being run off into Limestone Creek.
The project will cost about $650,000, which is covered in full by a grant from Environmental Facilities Corp (EFC), Olson said.
Updates to the stormwater system include adding a plantar that will catch runoff water from the street and sidewalks, put it through a filtration system and then into Limestone Creek. Porous asphalt, concrete and sidewalks also benefit this system because they will allow storm water to return slowly and safely back to the earth. This is beneficial because it will help reduce the load of work on the water treatment facility, prevents storm water from entering the sewer system and brings a green filtration system to the area.
Olson said this project is a part of the updated comprehension plan drafted in 2008, which states the village will implement a stormwater management program to “preserve, protect and celebrate the natural and cultural resources that contribute to the village’s unique character and perform important environmental functions for the community.”
There is a possibility for traffic flow to be impacted, said Olson, because much of the work it being done to improve the sides of the road and sidewalks and crews will work to minimize this impact because it is a high traffic area.
Although the plans are to have the project construction finished before public school begins in September, there is a possibility that it may cut into the start of school, said Olson.
