With his June 30 retirement as comptroller from both the towns of Salina and Van Buren, Greg Maxwell is taking a cue from Lysander comptroller David Rahrle by staying with Van Buren part-time.
While Maxwell has officially retired from both towns, Van Buren Supervisor Claude Sykes said Maxwell will continue to work two days a week in Van Buren.
“We’re going to put him back on part-time [starting in July],” Sykes said.
Since 2012, Salina and Van Buren have split Maxwell’s services 60-40 in an intermunicipal agreement. Van Buren paid 40 percent of Maxwell’s salary and benefits, roughly $30,000.
Salina Supervisor Mark Nicotra said the search for a new comptroller for Salina has begun.
“He’ll be big shoes to fill,” Nicotra said of Maxwell. “This skill set is relatively unique because there’s just not a lot of people who do municipal accounting at this level. Greg is not one of [the best], I think he is the best municipal comptroller in the area.”
