To the editor:
To village of Liverpool residents,
I have been collecting signatures of registered village residents on a petition so that we residents can have a say about the future of our Liverpool court. The number of signatures village officials required for a permissive referendum was 229 on April 14, but then rose to 290 signatures on May 3, and then rose again to 305 signatures on May 5. It is clear that they do not have an accurate list of registered voters. As village residents, we should not be required to acquire signatures just to have a say in such a major change. The decision to terminate any village service should be by a vote of the people, not unilaterally by our officials. The next village meeting is at 7 p.m. May 16. I urge my fellow village residents to attend this meeting and request the mayor and trustees to enact a local law requiring a mandatory referendum for the discontinuance of any of our village services or departments. And please, remember to vote June 21.
