An East Syracuse man has been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed his vehicle in Kirkville Sunday evening, according to a release by Sullivan-based state police.
According to police, at approximately 6:20 p.m. on April 2, Trooper Andrew Lipuma was dispatched by Madison County 911 to a one-car property damage accident at the intersection of Fyler Road and Adams Road in the Town of Sullivan, Madison County. The accident investigation revealed that a 2013 Fiat operated by Derek T. Figueroa, 25, of East Syracuse, was travelling south on Adams Road and failed to negotiate a right turn onto Fyler Road. Figueroa drove off the south side of Fyler Road and struck a group of trees. Figueroa was uninjured in the crash.
While interviewing Figueroa, Trooper Lipuma detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and sobriety tests indicated Figueroa was intoxicated. Figueroa was taken into custody for DWI and transported to the Oneida state police barracks for processing. A breath test determined Figueroa’s blood alcohol content to be .16 percent and a DMV check showed his license was in a suspended status.
Figueroa was issued traffic tickets for DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, aggravated unlicensed operation third degree and failure to keep right. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Sullivan court on April 11.
