The DeWitt Police Department has announced the arrest of two suspects in connection to a string of thefts occurring in the towns of Manlius and DeWitt.

Police report Jhani Jones, 19, and Darius Cage, 18, both of Syracuse, were found to be in possession of numerous stolen items obtained by entering unlocked vehicles  in the area following a traffic stop on Sept. 15. Jones and Cage were arrested and charged with grand larceny.

Both suspects admitted to DeWitt Police that they had committed the crimes and

agreed to ride around neighborhoods with police investigators to point out the locations of houses and vehicles they had stolen from, saying they targeted vehicles and garages that were unlocked. The investigation is ongoing, as it is believed that the suspects are responsible for dozens of larcenies from vehicles and other associated crimes over the last few months.

Police said the suspects made comments to the investigators such as, “Why don’t people lock their doors?” The DeWitt Police Department reminds everyone to always lock their cars, houses and garages as a way to deter thefts like these.

Officers said unfortunately many of the stolen items have already been sold to second hand stores or other individuals. If you believe you have any more information relating to this case, call the DeWitt Police at 449-3640.
