Mary Coleman and Lexi Phillips of Cicero-North Syracuse area Girl Scout Troop 10984 are working on their Silver Award Take Action Project. The Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette-level Girl Scout can receive.
In early February 2020, Coleman and Phillips connected with the CNY SPCA about building a cat patio for the shelter. The girls spent time researching, fundraising and building the cat patio, which they delivered to the CNY SPCA on Dec. 1.
The scouts plan to install the patio to the SPCA building In the spring after the roof is renovated.
The cat patio allows the shelter’s cats to enjoy the outdoors. The cat patio also protects the cats from vehicles, predators, poisons, diseases, or getting lost or stuck in trees. They reduce vet bills from cat fights or injuries. It protects birds and wildlife, it helps reduce the roaming cat population in local communities, and it provides a healthy lifestyle with fresh air, exercise, bird-watching, and sun-bathing.
