MARCELLUS — For the ninth straight year, the Marcellus Central School District is being honored for its seniors’ financial literacy.
Marcellus was named one of the 100 Best W!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance Thursday. The rankings showed the district finished 7th overall for midsized schools, and 26th overall.
The financial literacy program is a six week component of Jabe Kile’s economics course for seniors at Marcellus.
“We learn everything about money, banking, checking, savings, credit cards, debit cards, loans, investing, retirement, insurance – a wide range of topics that are very relevant and important for students to know,” Kile said. “At the end of that unit, I have a unit test which is the W!se organization’s national financial literacy test.”
W!se is an educational not-for-profit dedicated to personal finance education as well as college and workplace readiness. The organization created the top 100 list in 2013 based on those test results and other factors.
Marcellus has been included in the top 100 in the nation each year.
“It says we’ve got really motivated, good students here,” Kile said. “A big part of it is they show up wanting to learn, and if you present them with something that excites them and engages them, they’re going to do well at it.”
