Former Camillus police officer turned author to speak at Maxwell Library
Dennis Patrick Murphy, M.S.C.J. is a Navy veteran, former United States Air Force Reserve-OSI agent, former Camillus and Syracuse police officer, and an adjunct professor with a graduate degree in criminal justice.
As if that weren’t enough to keep him busy, Murphy is also a recently published author.
The public can learn about his experiences in A Tale of Two Careers, a virtual discussion presented via Zoom for Maxwell Memorial Library in Camillus on Monday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
After a lifetime in law enforcement on the local, state, and federal levels, Murphy turns to the realm of crime thriller fiction to bring his experiences and expertise to the public in a new way. The Thin Blue Line series starts with CPD Blue—The Rookie Years, based on Murphy’s work as a Camillus police officer. It continues with SPD Blue—Urban Policing and the not-yet-released third volume SPD Blue–Narcotics, with situations taken from his years in the Syracuse police department.
With the following titles on his resume: police officer, E.R.T. operator, detective, task force agent, police sergeant, detective sergeant, police lieutenant, Detective lieutenant, supervising criminal investigator, senior federal investigator, intelligence specialist, operational representative, and special agent—Murphy is well qualified to advise young men and women who are considering a career in law enforcement.
He does so as an adjunct professor at Onondaga Community College in the Department of Criminal Justice.
During the Zoom discussion, topics will include: the author’s background in law enforcement, the military and higher education, his inspiration for becoming an author and the process of self-publication, careers in law enforcement as well as a question and answer period regarding the novels in The Thin Blue Line series.
As a kickoff event to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), this virtual gathering gives aspiring authors the chance to get practical advice on starting, polishing, and publishing that first work. It also provides a unique opportunity for anyone thinking about becoming a cop to learn how to start and what to expect.
Finally, the general public gets a look inside one of the most challenging and rewarding careers out there and the lives of the men and women who keep the community safe.
The event is free, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link.
A computer, tablet, or smartphone is needed to attend this Zoom event.
