The Community Library of DeWitt & Jamesville and the Everson Museum of Art are partnering to bring book and art lovers a new Everson Art Book Club to enjoy from the comfort of home or wherever you might be.
Presented by the docents of the Everson, this social book club is open to adults and seniors looking to have a relaxing chat about a thrilling topic from the world of art. Enjoy a fascinating book and join the discussion on Zoom from your computer, tablet or phone. So far the library and the Everson have two discussions scheduled for this summer.
The club is discussing “A Perfect Red: Empire, Espionage, and the Quest for the Color of Desire” by Amy Butler Greenfield for the June session on June 30 at 6:30p.m. The book takes readers on a journey following the story of Cochineal dye, a mysterious substance that created the boldest red anyone had ever seen. Of course envy, intrigue, and adventure are part of this tale as European countries raced to figure out what it was and how to make it theirs.
On Aug. 4 the club will be discussing “The Last Painting of Sara de Vos” by Dominic Smith at 6:30p.m. The story starts in Amsterdam in 1631. It ends in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Readers will travel through four centuries and across continents chasing the fortunes of a painting called “At the Edge of a Wood.” Dominic Smith wraps the journey in love, deceit, and international intrigue. When you finish the last page, you may want to return to Amsterdam and start the journey all over again.
Both “A Perfect Red” and “The Last Painting of Sara de Vos” are available through the library’s Overdrive/Libby digital catalog: onondaga.overdrive.com/onondaga-dewitt/content
Registration is required for these discussions.
