Skaneateles resident receives President’s Volunteer Service Award
Liberty Mutual Insurance employee and Skaneateles resident Martha Buehler was one of seven Liberty employees to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Medal Award from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) that is administered by Points of Light. Liberty’s Chairman and CEO David Long presented the awards at a ceremony held at the company’s Boston office to celebrate the employees’ extraordinary dedication to community service. The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging citizens to live a life of service through presidential gratitude and national recognition.
“Philanthropy is at our core, both as a business and as individuals,” Long said. “Together with our employees, Liberty Mutual contributed $45 million last year toward vitally important nonprofit causes across the country. We are especially thankful to all of our Presidential Volunteer Service Award winners for volunteering over 100 hours. These Volunteer with Liberty participants embody our philanthropic mission of improving communities and helping people during their times of greatest need.”
Buehler was recognized for volunteering 931 hours serving with the Skaneateles Ambulance Volunteer Emergency Service. Responding to emergency calls from the community for medical assistance, Martha helps transport patients with medical conditions to hospitals, performs medical assessments, and when necessary begins medical treatment as directed by a paramedic.
“I am honored to receive this recognition for my work, but the true honor is being able to assist families in difficult times when they are facing life threatening dangers,” Buehler said. “I love working with the ambulance team to make Skaneateles a safer place to live and look forward to continuing partnering with them on this important work.”
Each of the Liberty Mutual employees who received the President’s Volunteer Service Award tracked their volunteer hours through the Volunteer with Liberty program, one of three legs of the company’s Liberty Torchbearers program that also includes Give with Liberty, the employee giving program, and Serve with Liberty, the global company-wide day of community service. Volunteer with Liberty showcases employees’ commitment to the mission of the nonprofits they share their time with outside of work.
The program allows employees to share information with colleagues about their volunteer activities for community nonprofit organizations where they spend their own time. It also allows them to log their hours and become eligible for a quarterly drawing of $250 that they give to the nonprofit of their choice. Employees who log over 100 hours become part of the company’s Torchbearers 100 Club, who receive $2,500 to give to their favorite charity.
