Recently, the Village of East Syracuse launched a two-part helmet safety program. Part one of the program ran from July 31 to August 31, during which more than 150 ice cream vouchers were handed out to children that were found wearing their helmets. Vouchers, redeemable for a free ice cream cone at the Village Deli, were handed out by Mayor Robert Tackman, village trustees, village staff and DeWitt police officers.
Starting Monday, Sept. 3, residents that are without a helmet can stop by the village office and receive a helmet for free. To receive a helmet, children need their parent/guardian to provide proof of residence. There are several different styles and sizes available, which are available whiles supplies last.
“Over the past couple years, we have seen an increase of children riding bicycles without helmets. This program is geared to encourage children to wear their helmets while riding their bikes,” said Mayor Robert Tackman.
Tackman also thanked the Village Deli, Advance Cyclery, the DeWitt Police, the village board and the village staff for making this program possible.
The ice cream vouchers were made possible at a discount with the support of the Village Deli. The helmets were supplied at a discount by the support of the Advance Cyclery.
