… an article was published in the Skaneateles Press regarding the Rescue Mission opening their first consignment shop, where people brought in their used items to exchange for a small amount of money. When an item sold, half of the profit would go to the owner and the other half to the store. Today, the Rescue Mission is still “sharing hope, ending hunger, and homelessness” by offering necessities at an affordable price. They accept and appreciate any volunteers they can receive to support their cause. Nearby locations include Grant Ave. in Auburn, as well as many locations in the Camillus and Syracuse area. It’s a great opportunity for your entire family to give back after the holidays.

… in the Jan. 20 edition of the Skaneateles Press, an article was published regarding the basketball game in which the Lakers were upset by Mexico, 72-77. Despite the loss, a great achievement was made. During the game, Skaneateles point guard Stefan Kowalski scored his 1000th point. Stefan would continue his success after this game and go on to accumulate a total of 1296 points. Today, there are 6 people in the history of the Skaneateles School District with 1000 or more points. These people include Jason Buff, Kathy Murphy, Dan Card, Pete Knupp, and finally, the newest person to achieve this incredible goal, Olivia Dobrovosky, who is currently in her junior year. During the game against Oneida over Christmas break, Olivia scored the 1000th point in her career and shows no signs of stopping.

Care packages have been sent to soldiers in the military for over a hundred years, and during those times, regulations to do so were constantly changing: in fact, they still are. In 1943, after Jan. 25, care packages and magazine subscriptions could not be sent overseas without a signed letter from the Army soldiers requesting the sent item. This was to save shipping space, and was implemented along with other changes made by the War Department. Other limitations were size and weight, and the articles included. Most importantly, were the the items not specifically requested, they could not be sent. Nowadays, there are still limitations, but for good reason. Be wary of postal, cultural and country regulations when making a care package. Images and items about faith and religion, radio transmitters and receivers, and anything against Islamic culture or broadcasting American culture should not be sent. More information can be found with a quick google search, should you be interested.
