Each of the area’s high school wrestling teams had to alter schedules in the wake of mid-week snowstorms and school closings.
CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt moved last week’s big showdown with Fulton to Jan. 4, while East Syracuse Minoa will now face Oswego on Jan. 8 and Fayetteville-Manlius pushed back, for a week, its league opener against Liverpool.
Then CBA/J-D went to Indian River for last Friday’s North Country Invitational, where with 177 points it claimed fourth place out of 16 teams. Camden (197 points) edged Indian River (195.5 points) for first place.
Tyler Kellison was victorious at 126 pounds, pinning Corey O’Connor (General Brown) in 41 seconds in the semifinals before a 14-7 decision over Indian River’s Logan Patterson in the title bout.
Meanwhile, at 170 pounds, Jake Wright held off Josh O’Reilly (Mexico) 6-3 to reach the finals, where Wright went all six minutes with Olean’s Devan Moore and picked up a 6-3 decision.
Favored at 113 pounds, Matt Griffin had to settle for second place after a 3-1 overtime defeat to South Jefferson-Sandy Creek’s Matt Garland in the finals. Myles Griffin dropped the 120-pound final to Tioga’s John Worthing.
Garrett Bauer nearly won at 138 pounds, only to lose, 5-4, in the championship bout to Tioga’s Austin Lamb. Aaron Gucciardi was fifth at 132 pounds, with David BeSeth fifth at 106 pounds as Alikhan Abdullayev (152 pounds) and Tyriq Block (160 pounds) had sixth-place efforts.
That same day, F-M finished ninth out of 19 teams at the Phoenix Round Robin Tournament, where Andrew Testani had the Hornets’ best finish, pinning Shakeem Roberts (Johnson City) in two minutes for third place at 285 pounds.
Braden Florczyk nearly matched that effort at 113 pounds, but lost 3-2 to Baldwinsville’s Tyler Schardt and settled for fourth place. Justin Bedell (138) beat Liverpool’s Kenny Haugabook 9-3 for fifth place as Ali Salem got fifth place at 145 pounds, beating Copenhagen’s Connor Carroll 9-4. Jon Scalzetti was sixth at 132 pounds and Luke Ovadias was sixth at 195 pounds.
F-M had competed back on Dec. 9 at the Cortland Duals, where it went 1-4, its only victory coming against Groton in a 27-24 decision. Scalzetti, at 132, beat Nick Radley 6-2 before Justin Bedell (138 pounds) claimed a 7-5 decision over Shane Smith.
Ben Christopher, at 152 pounds, held off Kyle Gombas 6-4 as Testani (285) pinned Chris Hickox at 92 seconds and Florczyk pinned Tanner Karschner in 57 seconds.
Before that, Dryden topped F-M 45-30, though Testani, Florczyk and Christopher earned pins, as did Salem in a 69-second fall over Vincent Scott.
The only points in the Hornets’ 78-3 loss to Fulton came from Salem, who beat Ian Bogardus 9-3 as Christopher fell 9-4 to Brandon Guernsey. In a 44-21 defeat to Pittsford, Florczyk, Christopher and Testani had pins as Scalzetti edged Alex Goulet 5-3.
When the Hornets lost 45-32 to Cortland, Sam Abraham (126) earned a second-period fall over Nolan Ryan before Scalzetti topped Noah Wurst 6-5. Salem got another pin as Christopher got a 17-0 technical fall over Jarrod Bush.
ESM wrestled last Saturday at the Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square, where it beat Chittenango 51-30 thanks to pins from Donovan Marriott (126), Ameer Ladd (220) and Christian Moon (99), while Ali Abdulla(160) beat James Moore 7-3.
