After a four-year hiatus, the Fayetteville Historic Preservation Commission’s Building of the Month award has returned to recognize structures that preserve the history of the village.
The Building of the Month for September 2016 is 500 S. Manlius St., currently owned by Richard and Beth Adler.
Adler said from his knowledge, the home was built in 1909 with lumber from B.H. Tracy & Sons, which is why he thinks the structure has stood solid for over 100 years.
“I think the home was made with quality lumber,” said Adler, who has owned the home for 20 years. “It was a Tracy house and other than the usual maintenance like replacing aging windows, there really hasn’t been much work we’ve had to put into it.”
The Building of the Month award was started in 2000 by the Historic Preservation Commission in order to “honor individuals who have helped to beautify and preserve the historic value of the village,” said chair Craig Polhamus.
The Historic Preservation Commission meets on a monthly basis and was created to uphold the historic character of the village, including the 44 properties that are included in the historic district of Fayetteville, Polhamus explained. The Building of the Month award began as a way to get residents to be interested in the history of the village and also in keeping up their homes and businesses. To his knowledge, the last time this award was given was in 2012.
Submissions for nominations to the award are currently being accepted. Properties must be located in the village, and nominations can be made to Deputy Village Clerk Karen Shepardson by calling 637-9864 or emailing [email protected].
