CROP Walk Water Wagons
During the Skaneateles Labor Day parade CROP Walk volunteers will be distributing free water among the parade watchers. The water bottles serve as a reminder of the Skaneateles Area CROP Walk to be held on Sunday, October 23 at a new venue- Austin Park (the old ice rink) at 1 E. Austin St. Registration is at 12:30 pm with the Step-off at 1 pm. The new venue allows us to walk indoors should the weather become uncooperative. We will have a few interactive challenges and some one-minute presentations by our CROP volunteers while people gather to register in the lobby of the arena.
Additionally the water bottles come with a challenge. Clean drinking water is a gift that millions of persons around the world do not have access. CROP’s parent organization, Church World Service helps hundreds of villages around the world dig new wells; so that there is clean drinking water available. Not only does this keep the villagers healthier and free of water-borne diseases but the time and effort saved by not having to walk five miles one way to a muddy water source frees children to go to school and families to raise gardens. People are encouraged to take their empty CROP water bottle home and then drop a dime in it every time they drink a bottle or glass of water. The dime-filled bottles can be returned at our CROP Walk event at Austin Park on October 23 or to Skaneateles United Methodist Church, 26 Jordan St., by October 31 (Office hours 9-1, M-F). These dimes will be added to our CROP Walk revenue. 25% of the funds raised stay locally to support our area food pantries. While you watch the parade, you can also keep an eye out for the CROP Walk Water Wagons.
