When it comes to the Jordan-Bramley Library, many people in the local community are incredibly supportive of the library and its mission.
But when a local family decided to downsize their home, the library ands it supporters were taken by surprise when the family offered the contents of their home for a tag sale to help support the library.
Shirley Drummond, president of the Friends of Jordan-Bramley Library, said the family, which has declined to be identified at this time, approached Jan Richardson, a trustee of the library with the idea about a month ago.
“They are downsizing and they couldn’t take all the contents of the home with them,” Drummond said. “The family approached Jan Richardson and suggested it and everyone thought it was a wonderful idea. It is just incredibly generous of them to offer to do this to support the library. We are so grateful.”
According to Drummond, the home is a three floor home dating back to the 1800s located in Memphis.
“I think it belonged to a Civil War soldier,” Drummond said. “After the war he got 200 acres of land and built the house. It is a magnificent home. It is a huge three floor home and third floor is a ballroom.”
With three floors and many years in the home, the family has amassed a great deal of interesting items.
According to Drummond, everything from Victorian furniture to antique dishware as well as tools and toys will be available at the tag sale.
“There is a little bit of everything,” Drummond said. “There are tools we think go back to when the house was built. There is furniture, antiques, dishes. They had children and grandchildren, so there are toys and stuffed animals a little bit of everything.”
The funds raised from the sale will go directly to the Jordan-Bramley Library.
Drummond said the plan is for the funds to be included with the library’s budget to help with capital projects.
“There are several projects the library needs to get done and they don’t have the money right now,” Drummond said. “This will help make those projects possible.”
In the days leading up to and including the sale, Drummond said she hopes to find as many volunteers as possible.
She said helpers are needed to help move items out of the house for the sale and assist with sales as to help buyers get items to their vehicles.
Drummond said this is a perfect opportunity for high school students who need to do volunteer work for school.
