Elbridge Free Library: Take a Book, Leave a Book
by Kathy Norman
Secretary Elbridge Free Library
Elbridge is the new home to two Little Free Libraries. Supported by the Elbridge Free Library, these little structures contain books donated by the library and community members. One is attached to the pavilion at the Seymour Lofft Park and the other is right next to the front door of our recently opened Bailiwick Market and Cafe.
The Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that supports the worldwide movement to offer free books housed in small containers to members of the local community.
The organization is based in Hudson, Wisconsin where Todd Bol mounted the first one in his
front yard as a tribute to his mother who was a book lover and school teacher. Likened to human bird feeders, there are now over 15,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. All 50 states and 40 countries are involved in the program.
The Little Free Library’s mission is to “promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.”
Our Little Free Library in Seymour Lofft Park was purchased from the organization by the Elbridge Free Library and was chosen to fit in with the natural surroundings. The Bailiwick Library was built by the members of Richard Rohmer’s Boy Scout Troop 57. In keeping with
Bailiwick’s farm theme, it is built to simulate a silo.
So, please feel free to visit our Little Free Libraries and Take a Book or Leave a Book!
