Hal McGrath, of Cazenovia, last week was inducted onto the Nottingham High School Wall of Fame for being an alumn who has made an outstanding contribution to his profession and/or his community.
McGrath, 85, is a nationally renowned tennis champion, starting with his days at Nottingham when he won the state championship in 1944. His successes then continued as a state champion at both the collegiate (Syracuse University) and senior men’s levels, and he won three consecutive gold medals in the National Senior Olympic men’s doubles from 2001 through 2005.
McGrath was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
In addition to his athletic career, McGrath was involved in the banking industry, retiring from Merchants National Bank as its vice president. He was active in the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, the Syracuse Sports Corporation, the Greater Syracuse Hall of Fame, Inc., the SU Varsity Club and the SU Orange Pack.
In addition to McGrath, the 2015 Nottingham High School Wall of Fame inductees included Henry Kalette ’40; Dr. Bruce Seidberg ’55; Robert Streeten ’73; Assemblyman Samuel Roberts and Louise Kauffman Sira, Esq. ’86.
The Nottingham Wall of Fame celebrates honorees each October at a banquet that also serves as the major fundraiser for the Nottingham parent-teacher group.
