Even with a five-game win streak and both defeats coming to Class AA opponents, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys soccer team remained missing from the state Class A rankings, though that might not last too much longer.
When Chittenango visited last Tuesday afternoon, the Red Rams endured the rain, along with a slow start, to bury the Bears 6-0, getting five of those goals in the second half to overcome 12 saves from Jacob Pynn, the Chittenango goalkeeper.
Jordan VanStry, scoring twice and adding an assist, anchored J-D’s well-balanced attack. Nate Shimer also had two assists as Jake Socia, Tyler Lux and Jack Mulvihill earned single goals. Joe Fazio, Peter Miedaner and Leo Elbert joined Socia in the assist column.
That set up Thursday’s game against East Syracuse Minoa, where the Spartans would engage in a long stalemate with the Red Rams until a second-half surge allowed J-D to escape with a 2-0 victory, its seventh in a row.
Facing plenty of early pressure, ESM goalie Jason Sweredoski turned everything back on his way to seven saves. Still, J-D broke the deadlock in the second half as VanStry netted another goal, as did Jacob Brazile. Dean Kousmanidis earned credit for an assist. The Rams held the Spartans to three shots all afternoon.
Yet another test awaited J-D on Saturday afternoon as it hosted a Skaneateles side that had just handed Westhill its first defeat of the season in a 2-1 decision two days earlier. Not caring about this one bit, the Rams would stop the Lakers’ momentum in a 1-0 victory.
J-D inched out in front in the first half, seeing Kousmanidis feed Socia for the go-ahead goal. Nothing else got past Skanetaeles netminder Sam Smith, who had six saves, but J-D’s fast-improving defense was so strong that Skaneateles managed just three shots all afternoon.
Before playing J-D, ESM had shut out Homer 2-0 on Tuesday, the victory attributed to Brad Hartung, who notched both goals, one in each half, along with a stingy defense that held the Trojans to one shot while ESM took 19 of them. Abdullah Mujcic assisted on one of Hartung’s scoring plays.
Then, right after the loss to the Red Rams, the Spartans handled West Genesee 4-1 on Friday, bolting out to a 3-0 halftime lead to seize control. Hartung and Nate Sturick both gained one goal and one assist, with David Neff and Bajazit Boric also converting. Sweredoski stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.
Manlius-Pebble Hill entered the week with a 3-4-1 record, but managed to climb to the .500 mark while also maintaining control of its long-time rivalry with Faith Heritage, shutting out the Saints 2-0 last Monday afternoon.
With a goal in each half, the Trojans gained enough to overcome the 10 saves from Faith goalkeeper David Buff. Sam Goldman and Nate Barton found the net with unassisted tallies as Stewart Falso turned back all four shots he faced.
Bishop Grimes could not get on the board in last Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Tully. Under constant pressure, Cobras goalie Michael Delvecchio made 11 saves, only allowing one goal in each half, but that proved enough for the Black Knights, who saw Drew McNerney and Jon Lippert earn those goals.
Back home Thursday to face Cato-Meridian, the Cobras pulled out a 1-0 decision, moving out in front in the second half when Zach Schell, taking a pass from Alex McDonald, put home the go-ahead goal. This helped overcome nine saves by Blue Devils goalie Connor Loveless.
