With the Cicero-North Syracuse boys tennis team, the constant theme throughout 2015 was how close it got to doing even more.
From a pair of 5-2 defeats to rival Liverpool to last Tuesday’s 4-3 defeat to Baldwinsville in the regular-season finale, the Northstars hinted at better results, but didn’t quite reach them.
Against B’ville, C-NS won two of three singles matches. Connor Doren fought past Mason Soeder 7-5, 7-5, with Brian Emigolz routing Chris Dotto 6-0, 6-1 as Rich Dennis took a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Griffin Lenkiewicz.
Needing two points in four doubles matches, the Northstars only got one of them, from Ryan Delao and Austin Fehrman, who beat Sam Damato and Matt MacConaghy in a three-set, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 battle.
Jack Irwin and Nate Perrotta los in three sets to Nick Grage and Daniel Mark 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Also, Andrew Hughs and Kyle Spivalk fell to Austin Dukat and Scott Ferrari 6-0, 6-0, with Justin Kegebein and Connor Millias taking a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini and Nick Walker.
All of this made Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over Central Square a bit sweeter for the Northstars, which saw Doren drop his singles match to Stan Kubis 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, but recovered with Emigolz beating Brandon Falise 6-0, 6-1 and Dennis rolled past Zach Griffing 6-1, 6-0.
In the closest of the four doubles matches, Hughs and Spivalk rallied past Nate Ecker and Don Mayer 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Kegebein and Millias beat Jake Kane and Tyler Wolstenholme 6-2, 6-1, with Fehrman and Tyler Delao beating Jacob Bourgeois and Parker Wells 6-2, 6-2. Irwin and Perrotta dominated in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kyle McAfee and Tom Ossevoort.
Liverpool, in its last match of the regular season, rolled past Syracuse West 7-0. Two singles and two doubles matches were forfeited, but Aaron Laviolette beat Daniel Tran 6-1, 6-2. Logan Enzerillo and Griffin Watson beat Ahmad Aberdeen and James Davis 6-1, 6-0, with Ghazi Ghazi and Adam Reed topping Robert Collier and William DeJesus 6-2, 6-0.
Matches began on Monday in the Section III Class A team tournament at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts. Liverpool had Sam Min in first singles, Evan Vogue in second singles and Leon Truong in third singles, with Enzerillo and Watson playing first doubles and Laviolette pairing with Evan Maestri in second doubles.
For C-NS, Emigolz, Doren and Dennis were in singles, joined by the teams of Hughs-Spivak and Kegebein-Millias in the two doubles divisions.
