In its most recent attempt to end the long win streak of Fayetteville-Manlius, the West Genesee boys tennis team had a few strong spots, but lacked the depth of the Hornets, especially on the doubles side, taking a 5-2 defeat to the Hornets last Wednesday afternoon.
Brent Boleslav engaged in a first singles classic with F-M’s Josh Druger, dropping the first set 7-5, but rallying to win the next two sets by equal 6-4 margins. Connor McGuigan also won in three sets, fighting past Jeremy Zhang 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
But Garrett Boleslav lost in straight sets to Riley Ma 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), and in all four doubles matches WG could not win a set. Pat Copeland and Drew Francisco got closest to a point, but lost a 6-4, 6-2 decision to D Judge and M Miller.
To start the week, WG shut out Syracuse West 7-0, with two of the matches forfeited. Among the contested matches, Parker Ventura played in singles, defeating Robert Collier 6-3, 6-1, while Pat Copeland had a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Umesh Rai 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, McGuigan paired with Wierbinski to bet Daniel Tran and Cang Tul 6-2, 6-1. Stefan Atanasov and Jack Fey defeated James Davis and Joseph Ngawi 6-1, 6-1, while George Cunningham and Connor Davie took a turn in doubles and handled William DeJesus and Armondo Shanes 6-2, 6-1.
All this happened as news came out that Garrett Boleslav would head to Division III power Washington College in Maryland next fall, while Brent Boleslav is going to Niagara University.
Westhill took a 5-0 defeat to Cazenovia on Tuesday afternoon, only getting close in second doubles, where Ballard Ballard and Sabastian Ramirez lost in three sets to David Marshall and Trevor Slocum 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Brian Sheridan and Matt Zabycz took a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Nate Romig and Andrew Terry. In singles, Andrew Domer fell to Ben Kmetz 6-1, 6-0, Colin Catone lost to Harry McDonough 6-0, 6-2 and Noah Rolince fell to Tim Kempton by that same 6-0, 6-2 margin.
A close 3-2 defeat to Skaneateles followed on Thursday afternoon. Catone survived his singles battle with Zach Driscoll 6-2, 6-7, 10-7, with Sheridan and Zabycz beating Connor Jones and Anthony Panasci 6-2, 6-2. But the Lakers won every other match in straight sets, including singles battles where Rolince lost to Ethan Weldon 6-2, 6-1 and Kersey Kerseyu fell to Connor Driscoll 6-0, 6-4.
Westhill lost again by a 3-2 margin, this time to Bishop Grimes, on Friday, unable to win any of the three singles matches and only getting close when Catone fell to Knox Wolaver 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. In doubles, Sheridan and Zabycz shut out William Hahn and Mario Perez 6-0, 6-0, while Ballard and Rolince paired up to beat Noah Fiacchi and Raju McMonagle 6-3, 6-4.
Marcellus was back in action last Tuesday and lost, 5-2, to Chittenango. Both points came in singles, where Steve Larison routed Keoni Saturnio 6-0, 6-1 and Ian LaFever shut out Mike Ackerman 6-0, 6-0. But the Bears won all three doubles matches, two of them forfeits, with Noah LeFever falling to Zach Falkenburg 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 and Andrew Kimmer taking a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Connor Martin.
Two days later, the Mustangs took a 6-1 defeat to Homer, with Zach Sauro preventing the shutout thanks to his 6-0, 6-1 singles win over Nate Potter. Kimmer lost, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1), to Drew Potter, with Larison and Con Clarke also taking singles defeats. One three-set match came in doubles, where Ian and Noah LaFever fell to Alex Cottrell and Vince Saraceno 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
But Marcellus would beat rival Skaneateles 3-2 on Friday, all of it coming from singles points. Kimmer stopped Zach Driscoll 6-2, 6-2, while Larison handled Ethan Weldon 6-3, 6-2 and Ian LaFever routed Luca Kunz 6-1, 6-1.
