Two trustees and two judges were sworn in at the April 6 meeting of the East Syracuse village board.
James Carr, an incumbent trustee of seven years, and Janet Mattox, a first-time trustee, were sworn in by East Syracuse Village Justice Joseph Zavaglia after winning the March 18 village elections. Mattox and Carr, both members of the People’s Party, beat out Conservative Party candidate Bernie Ment, with results showing 126 votes to Mattox, 116 to Carr and 74 to Ment. The trustee seats for Carr and Mattox will expire in March 2019.
Mayor Robert Tackman also announced his appointment of Carr as the deputy mayor for a one year term, a position that was left vacant after Barbara Falcone Quonce retired from the village board in March after 13 years of service.
“It’s been an honor and privilege getting to serve on this board and I’m happy to be appointed as deputy mayor to help keep the village going in the same direction it needs to be going in,” said Carr.
This was Mattox’s first time running for an elected position.
“I want to say thanks to the voters who came out,” Mattox said. “And thanks to everyone who has helped make this a seamless transition. I will strive to work toward my goals as a trustee.”
In addition to the two village trustees, two judges were sworn-in during the April 6 village board meeting.
Justice Joseph Zavaglia was sworn-in to continue his position as village justice by town of DeWitt Justice David Gideon. Zavaglia ran unopposed during the March 18 election. Zavaglia received a total of 154 votes and won the election unanimously. The term of his seat expires in March 2017.
Helena Glassford was sworn-in as acting judge for the village of East Syracuse by Justice Zavaglia, a term that expires in March 2016.
