What the Baldwinsville field hockey team hoped to accomplish, in Tuesday’s home game against Fayetteville-Manlius, was a bit of payback.
And the Bees would get it, not only defeating the Hornets, but doing so 2-1 in overtime, in large measure due to Serena Capsello’s timely offensive heroics.
If that looks familiar, it’s because those same two teams went to overtime on Sept. 13 on F-M’s turf, and B’ville lost by that same 2-1 margin, giving up the game-tying goal to Nancy Bansbach late in regulation and then the decisive goal in the waning seconds of the seven-on-seven extra period.
Here, the tie was established much earlier in the game. Capsello’s first-half goal put B’ville on the board, but Bansbach struck again, too, feeding it to Elizabeth Truman, who put it past Kaitlyn Gee to help establish a 1-1 halftime tie.
More familiar with a grass field, B’ville found itself parked in F-M’s end throughout much of the game, and in the second half tried hard to get out in front, only to find frustration as Hornets goalie Caroline Baril kept her team in it, recording nine saves.
But when it went to seven-on-seven play in OT, Capsello broke free and fired a shot past Baril to win it. That helped reward a superb defensive effort by the Bees, with Gee only having to make two saves.
Now B’ville (8-5) could relax a bit, not playing again until a busy final week of the regular season where it would face Class B powerhouse Camden next Tuesday, host Auburn on Oct. 16 and meet Oneida a day later – all told, three games in four days.
