Grabbing the Class B and overall championships made the Jamesville-DeWitt girls swim team’s season a rousing success long before it ventured to Ithaca College for this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
Yet the Red Rams managed to add to its honors here, reaching the medal podium in the 200-yard freestyle relay and setting another school record in the process.
Sophia Farchone started the race in the backstroke, and then Hayley Schultz handled the breaststroke before the Coyne sisters took over – Kalie in the butterfly, Alden in the freestyle.
Together, they qualified 10th on Friday in the 200 medley in one minute, 51.57 seconds, barely making it to Saturday’s finals.
But once there, the J-D quartet took off and set a school record with 1:50.67, improving nearly a full second from the day before and getting to sixth place in the state public portion and fifth in the Federation race. Ward Melville won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.38, barely two seconds ahead of the Rams.
Later in the meet, Kalie and Alden Coyne joined Molly Hair and Katie Salvo in the 200 freestyle relay, where J-D qualified in 1:40.90, but was faster there than in the finals, where a time of 1:41.14 left them in 20th place, just ahead of Liverpool (21st, 1:39.53), but behind West Genesee (11th, 1:39.40) and Oswego (12th, 1:39.43).
Individually, Kalie Coyne had the best showing, in the 200 individual medley, where she made her way to 15th place in 2:10.19, improving upon her 2:10.50 qualifying effort. Hair finished 27th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.55. She also was 23rd in the 100 butterfly (59.58 seconds) as Alden Coyne, in 24.65 seconds, gained 21st place in the 50 freestyle.
In all, 94 different teams earned points, and J-D, with 42 points, landed in 26th place, a solid showing, though West Genesee (73 points), whom it beat it the sectional meet, moved up to 14th place. Clarence (240 points) edged Pittsford (222 points) for the top spot.
