Another quest for glory has begun for the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team as it began the 2013-14 season nearly a full week before Thanksgiving.
Though based in Skaneateles, the Lakers feature players from throughout the surrounding area, since the closest high school varsity teams reside in Ithaca and Oswego.
They got started Friday night, at Austin Park Pavilion (where it will play all but one home game), where all the scoring was done in the third period of a 2-1 defeat to Albany Academy.
Amanda Lupo, the Port Byron goalie who is also a field hockey standout, made 23 saves and kept Albany Academy off the board until the last period.
Sarah Sauda gave the Lakers its first goal of the season, with Morgan Matthews earning the assist. But Albany Academy used goals by Natalie Tulchinsky and Narielle McHale to move out in front and stay there.
Skaneateles is not home again until Dec. 13, when it faces Canton. Before that, though, it will play four road games, three of them next week as it goes to Alexandria Bay on Monday and takes a weekend road trip to Massena and Canton on Dec. 6 and 7.
