Even without its top runners, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt girls cross country teams both managed impressive victories last Saturday at separate invitational meets.
The state Class A top-ranked Hornets did not have the likes of Annika Avery and Alana Pearl at the Tully Invitational, but with 34 points, it still finished ahead of Cicero-North Syracuse (56 points) and Baldwinsville (88 points) in the Large School division.
Olivia Ryan finished in 19 minutes, 50.3 seconds, third behind C-NS’s Jacqlynn Halstead (19:39.1) and Cortland’s Hayley Tasselmyer (19:42 flat), while Mackenzie Pierie finished fifth in 20:01.3.
Samantha Levy, in 20:09.3, made her way to seventh place as Mikayla Ruthig finished eighth in 20:24.7. Katie Krieger was 11th, in 20:49.3, to round out the scoring column as Sophie Ryan took 12th place (20:54.7) and Mackenzie Tripp (21:10.6) made her way to 14th place.
Away from all this, Jamesville-DeWitt’s cross country teams went to the Whitesboro Invitational, where the girls Red Rams did not have Rachel Fairbanks in the lineup, but still held off South Lewis, 52 points to 69, for team honors.
Emilee Carpenter and Laura Wengert went 1-2 among individuals, as Carpenter won in 20:29.8, nearly a full minute ahead of Wengert’s time of 21:13.3. Further back, Samantha Jaffe was 11th, in 22:13.4, with Alexandra Street 16th (22:40.9) as Lizzie O’Brien (23:55.7), Lauren Morelli (24:02.5) and Allison Hohreiter (24:11.5) occupied the 25th through 27th spots.
East Syracuse-Minoa also was in the girls Large School division at Tully, but without its top runners (Gabby Pallotta and Juliette Miller), it finished sixth out of eight teams.
Cindy Brownson led the Spartans, finishing 19th in 21:36.1, while Brittany Kubecka was 28th (23:03.2), one spot ahead of teammate Maria Miner (23:03.4) in 29th place, with Bridget Benz (24:07.9), Allison Macri (24:09.0) and Shantelle Clark (24:53.9) further back.
F-M’s boys team did not have Bryce Millar, Andrew Berge’ and other stars at Tully, and the remaining Hornets had to settle for third place with 79 points behind full-strength squads from Central Square (whom F-M beat 15-50 earlier in the week) and C-NS, who won with 43 points.
Jon Abbott was ninth, in 17:03.5, with David Berman 10th in 17:16.9, followed by Bryan Geehrer (17:41.7) and Paul Billinson (17:50.3) in the top 20, with Kenny Kaiser (18:07.) in 24th ahead of Brendan Pearl (18:20.4) and Troy Middleton (18:39.0).
ESM, who finished fourth, had Jesse Perrone take second place among individuals in 16:40 flat, trailing only Mexico’s Jacob Zedeck (16:30.5) at the wire. Behind Perrone, the Spartans featured Joe Coogan, who took 15th place in 17:37.8. Jared Henry got 29th place in 18:16.4, just ahead of Kyle Willey (18:24.2) in 32nd place.
