Liverpool’s girls swim team might be young and relatively untested (13 new girls on the roster), but it is full of talent, and it knows when to get the important work done in a league meet.
When the Warriors visited Auburn last Wednesday night, it won each of the first seven races, gaining important points as it held on for an 83-82 victory over the Maroons.
As a starting point, Liverpool’s 200 medley relay team of Olivia Corlett, Sydnie Sovinsky, Claire Donovan and Nicole Abbott gained first place in 2:03.76.
Sovinsky was far from done, moving from there to the 200 individual medly, where she prevailed in 2:28.50, and the 100 butterfly, where she again took first place in 1:06.32.
Madeline Murphy wasn’t quiet, either, going from a victory in the shortest race, the 50 freestyle (25.49 seconds), to a win in the longest race, the 500 freestyle, which Murphy covered in 5:41.66.
Corlett waited until the 100 backstroke to find individual glory as she took first place in 1:08.06, while Madison Hall swam the 100 freestyle in 59.83 seconds and Julia Telesca, in 2:10.73, beat the field in the 200 freestyle.
Liverpool’s fine week did not end there. At Saturday’s RIT Invitational in Rochester, the Warriors, who faced a key CNY Counties League meet against Oswego on Tuesday night, posted several impressive individual and relay efforts.
Murphy posted her best times of the season in two events, covering the 50 freestyle in 24.50 seconds and 100 freestyle in 54.61 seconds. Sovinsky set a new personal mark in the 100 butterfly, improving to 1:01.59, and Corlett had her quickest 100 backstroke of the season, finishing in 1:05.19.
As for the Warriors’ relay teams, Murphy, Sovinsky, Corlett and Abbott broke two minutes in the 200 medley relay and finished in 1:58.83. Later in the meet, Sovinsky and Murphy, joined by Hall and Julia Telesca, improved their 200 freestyle relay time to 1:44.89.
Cicero-North Syracuse had its own meet with Oswego last Tuesday night, and struggled in all of the early races as it lost to the Buccaneers 95-80.
Oswego won each of the first six events before the 100 freestyle, where Breanna Ruffrage, in a time of 58.94 seconds, beat Zoe Ferris (59.93 seconds) for the top spot.
Later, C-NS would take the 400 freestyle relay in 4:08.21, but by that point the Bucs had long clinched the meet, getting double wins from Mariah Metcalf in the 200 freestyle (2:02.24) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.83), and Caitlin Gorton, who prevailed in the 50 freestyle (25.53 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:03.24) with some of the best Section III times of the fall.
